Packaging History and the Role of BMSI

Packaging history goes back a long way. The early Chinese would wrap foods as early as the first or second century B.C in paper. Paper, from treated mulberry bark, was known as the first “flexible packaging”.

Paper bags are reported to have been first manufactured in England around 1845. Further technology during the 1870’s produced glued paper bags and the gusset design. The history of packaging tells of more technology being introduced in the 1850’s with a bag making machine. Evolving through the years, in 1905, these same machines were altered to automatically produce in-line printed paper bags.

Packaging history has definitely been an interesting story to tell. Technology and ingenuity have guided the way when producing a more efficient packaging product for various applications. The Chinese were leaders in recognizing the importance of transporting foods from one area to another. This principal has evolved over many centuries to what we have today.
